Training: Consultants in Oral Bible Translation (Africa Area)

This project is an essential step in expanding Africa’s capacity for oral Bible translation (OBT). By equipping 20 consultants with practical OBT checking skills and fostering a supportive community of practice, this project will accelerate access to oral Scriptures and empower consultants to better serve communities in Africa.

Summary

Across Africa, the need for accessible Scripture remains urgent. Many communities are primarily oral in their communication and learning styles. Oral Bible Translation (OBT) has proven effective at delivering Scripture naturally and understandably to these audiences.

While OBT projects are growing worldwide, most Bible translation consultants have been trained only in written translation contexts. This creates a bottleneck for OBT projects in Africa because consultants often struggle to adapt their written-translation background to oral methods.

This project seeks to provide a two-week training workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa for 20 written-translation consultants from across the continent. The workshop will equip them with practical OBT consultant-checking skills while building a regional community of practitioners who will continue to learn from and support each other.

Funding will primarily cover travel and room and board expenses for workshop participants and trainers. Over time, the Africa OBT consultant network will sustain itself through peer-led workshops, organizational co-sponsorship and integration of OBT skills into standard consultant training.
